More Than 10,000 Lawyers Have Left Trump Administration
More than 10,000 lawyers left federal service since the beginning of 2025, producing a turnover rate far above normal. The New York Times analysis reported over 2,600 attorney departures from the Department of Justice, about 700 from the Department of Defense, and nearly 300 from the Department of Health. The Department of Education lost 53% of its 645 lawyers employed at the end of 2024. Deep staffing cuts and resignations by staff who objected to Trump’s policies contributed to the exodus. The administration has signaled that ideological alignment is required, including a January X post by Chad Mizelle soliciting attorneys supportive of the administration.
