Pete Hegseth, the recently appointed Defense Secretary, is under scrutiny for his leadership practices, particularly relating to his use of the encrypted messaging app Signal. Reports detail that he engaged in numerous chats discussing sensitive topics, including military operations and travel. Hegseth's directives led to a controversial temporary halt on military flights to Ukraine, catching administration officials off guard. His approach has raised questions about effective communication and decision-making within the defense department, drawing criticism and demands for accountability.
Sources tell The Wall Street Journal that the Defense secretary took part in at least a dozen chats in the app, many of which were started by Hegseth himself. According to the Journal, Hegseth used the chats to discuss his schedule, foreign travel, and media appearances.
Notably, the Journal reports that Ricky Buria, a retired Marine colonel and top aide to Hegseth, used the secretary's personal phone to send some of his Signal messages, including sensitive information about the Pentagon's planned attack on Houthi militants.
