Minnesota gears up for mass anti-ICE protest
"Businesses are shutting up shop for the day with protests set to take place amid temperatures of -21 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of -40 (-29 degrees Celsius with a wind chill of -40 degrees Celsius). While states across the US have declared a state of emergency because of the severe winter storm, in parts of Minnesota and North Dakota, temperatures could plummet to as low as -45 degrees Celsius, according to the National Weather Service."
"One of those mobilizing compared the presence of immigration officers to the winter weather warnings. "Minnesotans understand that when we're in a snow emergency we all have to respond and it makes us do things differently," said Kate Havelin of Indivisible Twin Cities, one of the more than 100 groups preparing to protest. "And what's happening with ICE in our community, in our state, means that we can't respond as business as usual," she said."
Labor unions, civil society groups and religious leaders plan statewide protests in Minnesota against federal immigration enforcement operations. Thousands of ICE agents have been deployed to Minneapolis as the administration advances deportation efforts nationwide. Protests are scheduled amid severe winter conditions, with forecasts of -21°F and wind chills near -40°F and potential lows around -45°C in parts of Minnesota and North Dakota. More than 100 groups are mobilizing and organizers say around 700 businesses will close in solidarity. Flyers reading "ICE OUT!" have been posted on doors, and daily demonstrations have occurred in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
