Former Vice President Mike Pence criticized President Donald Trump for statements made during his recent speech in Saudi Arabia, which he deemed disrespectful to US veterans. Trump denounced U.S. interventions in the Middle East, attributing the growth of cities like Riyadh to local efforts instead of Western nation-building. While Pence acknowledged the success of Trump's trip overall, he contended that questioning America's fight against terrorism, especially in Saudi Arabia, was inappropriate and insulted the sacrifices of American troops who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He expressed concern over Trump's rhetoric on foreign soil.
And to have the president in Saudi Arabia questioning America's global war on terror, and describing it as nation-building and interventionist, I thought was a disservice to generations of Americans who wore the uniform and who took the fight to our enemy, you know, in Afghanistan and in Iraq.
The interventionists were intervening in complex societies that they did not even understand themselves. Trump's remarks were made during one leg of a multi-day trip to the region.
But, Kristen, I've never been a fan of American presidents criticizing America on foreign soil, he said. And to have the president in Saudi Arabia...I thought was unfortunate.
