"Grijalva won the race for the House seat previously held by her late father, Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.), in a special election on September 23, a full week before the shutdown began. But House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) sent the chamber home on September 19 after it passed a short-term funding bill to keep the government open. Keeping the House out of session is Johnson's attempt to force Senate Democrats to accept the GOP's funding bill"
"This is a very convenient side effect for Johnson, because Grijalva has said she'd be the tipping-point signature on a bipartisan resolution to force a vote on releasing the Epstein Files. That resolution is known as a discharge petition, and it means that if a Speaker refuses to bring a piece of legislation to the floor, a majority of the House can sign on to make sure it sees the light of day."
Adelita Grijalva won a special election on September 23 for the House seat previously held by her late father but has not been sworn in because the House is in recess during a federal shutdown. Speaker Mike Johnson recessed the chamber to pressure Senate Democrats on a funding bill, preventing Grijalva's swearing-in. Grijalva would likely provide a necessary signature for a discharge petition to force a vote on releasing the Epstein Files. The petition’s sponsors include Reps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna, and three Republicans have joined. Democrats have publicly protested and pressured Johnson to return the House.
