"I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank,"
"It's not going to happen."
"The Arab and Muslim countries made very clear to the president the danger of annexation of any type in the West Bank, and the risk that poses, not just for the potential of peace in Gaza, but also to any sustainable peace at all,"
The United States opposes Israeli annexation of the West Bank and has stated such annexation must stop. The West Bank has been occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War, while the Palestinian Authority administers semi-autonomous areas. Israel has built settlements in the West Bank since 1967 that are considered illegal under international law. Israel recently approved a controversial settlement project that would split the territory and undermine prospects for a Palestinian state. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces pressure from right-wing allies to annex the territory. Arab and Muslim leaders warned that annexation would jeopardize peace in Gaza and broader regional stability.
