Matthew Dowd Fired From MSNBC Over Charlie Kirk Comments
"He's been one of the most divisive, especially divisive, younger figures in this, who is constantly sort of pushing this sort of hate speech aimed at certain groups. And I always go back to, hateful thoughts lead to hateful words, which then lead to hateful actions. You can't stop with these sort of awful thoughts you have and then saying these awful words and not expect awful actions to take place. And that's the unfortunate environment we are in."
"My thoughts & prayers are w/ the family and friends of Charlie Kirk. On an earlier appearance on MSNBC I was asked a question on the environment we are in. I apologize for my tone and words.- Matthew Dowd (@matthewjdowd) September 11, 2025"
"Dowd's comments were "inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable." "We apologize for his statements, as has he," the statement added. "There is no place for violence in America, political or otherwise.""
MSNBC fired political pundit Matthew Dowd after on-air comments about the shooting involving Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk. Dowd characterized Kirk as a divisive younger figure who pushes hate speech and said hateful thoughts lead to hateful words and then hateful actions. Dowd's remarks aired after the shooting but before Kirk's death was confirmed. Dowd issued an apology on social platforms saying he did not intend to blame Kirk and offered thoughts and prayers to Kirk's family and friends. MSNBC and president Rebecca Kutler called the comments inappropriate, insensitive and unacceptable and apologized.
