"Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is once again calling for people to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, this time over the children's TV show Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City, and is using it to push her hateful anti-trans bill. "This is disgusting," Greene said in a post on X, sharing a clip posted by anti-LGBTQ+ activist Chaya Raichik (who posts as "Libs of TikTok")."
"The Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City clip in question comes from the season 2 episode, "The Fashion Show," which first aired in September 2022. The episode introduces Banoffee, the show's first explicitly trans character (or "trans berry" as she calls herself). In the clip, two of the main characters gush over her dress for the Mint Gala, parts of which are in the colors of the trans flag."
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called for canceling Netflix over a Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City episode and used a shared clip to promote the Protect Children's Innocence Act. Greene shared a clip posted by anti-LGBTQ+ activist Chaya Raichik (Libs of TikTok) and wrote that children are not trans and that gender transitions constitute grooming and child abuse. The contested clip comes from season 2 episode "The Fashion Show," which first aired in September 2022 and introduces Banoffee, the show's first explicitly trans character who calls herself a "trans berry." In the clip two main characters admire Banoffee's Mint Gala dress, which includes colors of the trans flag. The Protect Children's Innocence bill, first introduced in 2023 and reintroduced in the 119th Congress, would make providing gender-affirming care to trans youth a felony and would make it harder for adults to access gender-affirming care.
