Long Island town's GOP majority shuts down Dem's motion to kill controversial ICE contract
Briefly

The Town of Islip reaffirmed its partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement by rejecting a motion from Jorge Guadrón to terminate the contract allowing ICE training at the town's gun range. Despite vocal opposition from community activists during a lengthy town meeting, the proposal did not receive a second from other board members and ultimately failed. As a result, ICE will retain access to the range through June of the following year. The majority board members left the meeting without acknowledging the protests, issuing a statement earlier that dismissed the politicization of the matter.
Jorge Guadrón proposed to suspend ICE's access to Islip's rifle range, emphasizing concerns for the constituents' mental well-being, but the motion lacked support from the board.
After the motion failed, chaos erupted during the Town meeting, with community members expressing outrage and shouting at the board members as they exited.
The GOP majority walked out unfazed by the uproar, later issuing a statement criticizing those politicizing the issue and emphasizing the need for trust in law enforcement.
ICE will continue using the rifle range for training until the contract's expiration next June, reflecting the town's continued partnership despite community opposition.
