Log Cabin Republicans Disrupted Yasmin Williams's Kennedy Center Performance - Washingtonian
"Kennedy Center staffers called security last week after DC's Log Cabin Republicans chapter disrupted a performance by a musician they called "a vocal opponent of President Trump." Yasmin Williams, an Alexandria-based and globally hailed guitarist, made headlines earlier this year for sparring with new Kennedy Center president Ric Grenell. She nonetheless honored her pre-Trump-takeover contract to perform at the Millennium Stage on September 18."
"A member of Grenell's staff even distributed passes and welcomed the men as they arrived, a current staffer confirmed for Washingtonian. Williams was stunned. "All of a sudden all these security officers rolled up," she says. After taking the stage with her custom guitar, she realized why the officers were present. "There were about 20 guys in suits, and some of them were wearing MAGA hats," Williams says."
Kennedy Center staff called security when a group of roughly 50 men reserved to attend a Millennium Stage concert were reported to intend heckling and harassing guitarist Yasmin Williams. The reserved seats were arranged through new president Ric Grenell's office, and a staff member reportedly distributed passes and welcomed the men. Williams proceeded with her performance but noted heavy security presence and about 20 suited attendees, some wearing MAGA hats. Red-hatted Trump supporters have grown more common at the Center since Donald Trump became board chairman in February, and staff described a tense atmosphere. Log Cabin Republicans declined to comment and a Kennedy Center communications vice president declined to answer on record. Free Millennium Stage shows require tickets to guarantee chairs.
