"We are breathing a sigh of relief, but the fight is not finished."
"The administration can appeal court decisions. Congress can choose to not fund IMLS in future years. ALA calls on everyone who values libraries to remind their Congressmembers and elected officials at every level why America's libraries deserve more, not fewer resources."
The Institute of Museum and Library Services reinstated all grants that had been terminated earlier in the year and posted a notice that the action supersedes prior termination notices. The IMLS awards federal grant funding to libraries and museums and had been affected by a presidential executive order that led to grant cancellations. The terminations particularly harmed small and rural libraries with limited alternate funding. Attorneys general from 21 states sued, and a Rhode Island federal judge ruled the prior actions unlawful. Reinstated funds free months-long held money for workforce training, pilot programs, and rural internet access. IMLS awarded $266 million in grants in 2024.
