Lawmakers seek to end approach DeSantis has used in delaying special elections
""It's terrible that we can't count on special elections in a timely manner," said state Sen. Tina Polsky, a Broward-Palm Beach county Democrat."
"The result, she said, is sometimes "there's no representation for certain people.""
""It shouldn't be dependent on politics or what the seat looks like," Polsky said."
Since taking office, Ron DeSantis has varied the timing of special elections, calling some quickly and delaying others for weeks or months. Faster calls typically occur when a vacated seat appears likely to elect a Republican; longer delays are more common when the vacancy is in a Democratic district. State law gives the governor discretion over scheduling special primaries and general elections, prompting legislation from Democrats Tina Polsky and Michael Gottlieb to require faster timetables. The governor can fill many state vacancies but cannot appoint replacements for the legislature or U.S. House seats.
