The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has resumed its transfers of jail inmates to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the first time since early 2020. Eight inmates were transferred in May and a dozen in June. The majority of these inmates are from Latin America, with ages ranging from 19 to 63. The transfers are claimed to be lawful under existing sanctuary policies, and federal judicial warrants were obtained for most of the cases. Local officials assert there is no conflict between California and federal law regarding these transfers.
The recent transfers were lawful and aligned with sanctuary policies despite local regulations aimed at protecting individuals from deportation. Immigration detainers were respected according to legal standards.
Sheriff's department records revealed that eight inmates were released to ICE in May and another twelve in June, predominantly from Mexico and Central America.
