Charlie and Kearne, both 16, were fatally stabbed in violent gang-related incidents. Charlie was attacked as he lay defenseless after a hit-and-run by T-Block gang members. Kearne, one of the assailants, mistakenly stabbed himself during the altercation. Jake Debonsu, who was present, claimed not to have participated in the attack, with his statements during prison calls used against him to suggest intent. His appeal argues that those statements were merely bravado aimed at protecting his reputation within a gang culture. The prosecution maintained that Debonsu's conviction was secure based on the evidence presented.
Jake Debonsu did not stab either victim but admitted being in the car when it hit Charlie and driving the vehicle away with the attackers inside.
Debonsu claimed he lied about his role in the killings to avoid being seen as a coward and to protect his reputation.
