Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced intentions to potentially jail Democratic lawmakers who recently fled the state to avoid voting on a controversial redistricting plan. This decision came amidst a standoff regarding the Republicans' push for a mid-decade redrawing of congressional districts, deemed by Democrats as a partisan power grab. A deadline was set for the lawmakers to return, or risk expulsion and arrest. Paxton expressed readiness to enforce the law vigorously, asserting that tools would be used to ensure their return to the Capitol.
Paxton warned that he would hopefully put the Democratic lawmakers who fled Texas in jail if they fail to return by the deadline.
If they show up, we're happy, can get business done and everything is good. If they do not show up...hopefully put them in jail.
Paxton stated that Democrats attempting to flee should be found, arrested, and returned to the Capitol immediately, using every available tool.
Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn mentioned that President Trump's FBI agreed to assist in hunting down the fleeing Texas lawmakers.
