Just Not True!' CNN's Daniel Dale Torpedoes Trump's Claim That Grocery Prices Are Down
"The fact is that these claims are just not true, Dale told CNN's Omar Jimenez. We know that because of the new Consumer Price Index report released this morning, which shows that from August to September, grocery prices increased again by 0.3%. That followed a 0.6% increase from July to August, which was the biggest jump in three years. Dale went on to cite conversations with food economists:"
"Importantly, he noted that it's not just grocery inflation on which the president is making these kinds of false claims, but about overall inflation as well. Inflation very much continues to exist, clarified Dale. Overall, consumer prices rose 0.3% from August to September. They're up about 2.4% since President Trump returned to office in January This rate of inflation this past September was the highest since May 2024."
The Consumer Price Index showed grocery prices rose 0.3% from August to September, following a 0.6% increase from July to August, the largest jump in three years. Food economists attribute some of the grocery-price increases to a crackdown on undocumented farmworkers and to significant tariffs on imported goods. Overall consumer prices rose 0.3% month-to-month and are about 2.4% higher since January. The September inflation rate was the highest since May 2024. Inflation remains lower than the 2022 peak above 9%, but grocery prices are not down and inflation has not been eliminated.
