"We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them."
"What people don't understand is broadcasters are entirely different than people who use other forms of communication. They have a license granted by us at the FCC, and what comes with it is an obligation to operate in the public interest."
FCC Chair Brendan Carr warned that the FCC may pursue remedies against ABC, Disney, and Jimmy Kimmel for implying that Charlie Kirk's suspected killer supported President Donald Trump. Carr said he can see a path toward suspension for Kimmel at minimum and urged the companies to discipline him to avoid regulatory action. Carr criticized Kimmel's insinuation as playing into a false narrative and called such framing sick. Reported details indicate the suspect, Tyler Robinson, was left-leaning, had a romantic relationship with his trans roommate, used Antifa-associated phrases, and reportedly said he shot Kirk because of Kirk's hatred. Carr emphasized that broadcasters hold FCC licenses and owe an obligation to operate in the public interest.
