President Donald Trump urged Republicans to abolish the Senate filibuster to clear the 60-vote threshold. He claimed that without termination nothing would pass for three years and Republicans would be blamed for legislative inaction. He asserted ending the filibuster would allow Republicans to pass policies restricting transgender participation in sports, expand gun rights, cut taxes, strengthen border enforcement, and secure elections. He warned Democrats would otherwise eliminate the Second Amendment, add new states to gain senators, pack the Supreme Court, and gain Electoral College advantages. He framed the filibuster as the sole barrier to sweeping conservative policy enactment.
