Judge orders immigration agents in Chicago to use body cams
"Judge Sara L. Ellis of the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois said during a hearing Thursday morning that she would require ICE agents in Chicago engaged in "Operation Midway Blitz" to use body cameras. But the logistics of enforcing her order are yet to be worked out, since Chicago was not included in earlier ICE body cam programs, and the government shutdown might complicate acquiring and issuing new equipment."
"Jon Seidel, federal courts reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times, quoted Ellis as saying, "I would not require people to turn on a body camera that they don't have," following objections raised by Department of Justice lawyer Sean Skedzielewski. The decision is an expansion of a temporary restraining order issued by Ellis last week, limiting the use of certain dispersal tactics, including the use of riot control weapons like pepper spray and tear gas."
Judge Sara L. Ellis ordered ICE agents in Chicago engaged in Operation Midway Blitz to use body cameras and expanded limits on dispersal tactics. Logistics for implementing the body camera requirement remain unresolved because Chicago was not part of earlier ICE body-cam programs and a government shutdown could hinder obtaining equipment. ICE has continued arrests and deportations, citing national security and public safety. Ellis stated she would not require agents to activate cameras they do not possess and expanded a temporary restraining order restricting riot-control weapons like pepper spray and tear gas. The Chicago ICE field office director was ordered to appear in court.
