Judge blocks Trump's attempts to deploy troops to Portland DW 10/06/2025
"US President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of about 200 members of the California National Guard from Los Angeles to Portland, the Pentagon announced Sunday. In a statement, the Department of Defense claimed that the troops would be sent to Oregon's largest city "to support US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal personnel performing official duties, including the enforcement of federal law, and to protect federal property.""
"The move to reassign the troops from California is Trump's attempt to circumvent a federal judge's order on Saturday that temporarily blocked him from deploying 200 soldiers from Oregon's National Guard to Portland, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said. "The facts on the ground in Oregon haven't changed," Kotek said during a news conference Sunday. "There's no need for military intervention in Oregon. There's no insurrection in Portland, there's no threat to national security. Oregon is our home, not a military target.""
"On Saturday, District Judge Karin Immergut who was appointed by Trump disagreed with the White House's claims that Portland is a 'war zone,' and said the city's 'regular law enforcement forces' were able to deal with clashes between federal immigration agents and protesters. Immergut said Trump's description of Portland was 'simply untethered to the facts.' The troop deployment has been blocked until at least October 18."
The Pentagon announced President Trump ordered about 200 members of the California National Guard to Portland to support ICE and protect federal property. Local and state officials described nightly protests near the federal ICE building as small and sedate, while the President characterized the city as war-ravaged. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said there was no need for military intervention and no threat to national security. District Judge Karin Immergut found the White House characterization unsupported by facts and temporarily blocked the troop deployment, with the injunction lasting until at least October 18.
