"The president gave a record-long State of the Union speech Tuesday night that included many of the elements that have become familiar to Trump speeches and SOTUs in general. There were the Democrats not applauding, the complaints about Democrats not applauding, the shout-outs to guests in attendance, Trump attacking Democrats and others, and the boasts of various sizes and accuracies."
During a Democratic counter-rally on the National Mall held in response to President Trump's State of the Union address, independent media host Joy Reid was heckled by an audience member who shouted insults. Reid responded by reframing the disruption as proof of her celebrity status, claiming the heckler was actually a fan and obsessive follower. She used humor to defuse the situation, telling the heckler that their knowledge of her identity while remaining unknown themselves demonstrated fan behavior. The rally, organized by MeidasTouch, MoveOn, and 15 other organizations, featured Democratic speakers including Senator Chris Van Hollen and Senator Chris Murphy, who also encountered stage disruptions from Trump supporters during their remarks.
