Sen. John Fetterman will not join Democrats planning to protest or skip President Trump's State of the Union address on February 24 and prefers attendees to maintain dignity. Some Democrats plan a counter-programming event called the People's State of the Union at the National Mall with participating senators including Ed Markey, Jeff Merkley, Chris Murphy, Tina Smith, and Chris Van Hollen. Fetterman views interruptions at the speech as undignified and believes counter-programming will have less impact than organizers expect. Fetterman also urged declassification of extraterrestrial files and framed disclosure as a potential bipartisan issue.
