Sydney Reid was detained on July 22 while filming the transfer of immigrants from DC police to federal custody and was roughed up by ICE and FBI agents. During the scuffle, FBI Agent Eugenia Bates bruised her knuckles and prosecutors sought to charge Reid with assaulting an officer. Multiple grand juries declined to return indictments, with three separate panels no-billing the alleged assault. With the 30-day indictment window expiring on August 25, prosecutors admitted no indictment and refiled a misdemeanor assault charge that bypasses grand jury review. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro has faced at least a dozen no-bills recently. Reid retained federal public defenders and refused to waive speedy trial rights.
