Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois announced he will block any attempts by President Trump and Texas officials to arrest fleeing Texas Democrats. The Democrats left Texas to hinder a redistricting vote that could benefit Republicans. Trump has suggested using the FBI to intervene, while Texas Senators have also requested assistance in returning the lawmakers. Pritzker remarked that no federal law pertains to the situation and affirmed the responsibility of Illinois law enforcement to protect those in the state, regardless of federal actions.
Pritzker stated, "They're grandstanding. There literally is no federal law applicable to this situation none. They can say that they're sending FBI."
He emphasized the role of local law enforcement, asserting, "Our local law enforcement protect everybody in Illinois. Our state troopers protect everybody in Illinois and anybody who's here in Illinois."
