Jay Jones's GOP Opponent Burns Dem AG Candidate Over Violent Fantasies: He Wouldn't Pass the Background Check'
"Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares (R) delivered a blistering rebuke of Democratic challenger Jay Jones during Friday's edition of Fox's America Reports, saying Jones wouldn't pass a background check in his attorney general's office. If Jay Jones were applying to be a line prosecutor in my attorney general's office in fact, any attorney general's office in all 50 states he wouldn't pass the background check for the job, said Miyares to Fox's Sandra Smith and John Roberts."
"There were four people in court that day, all going around the same speed, Miyares continued. Three out of four of those people got active or suspended jail time. The only person who didn't was Jay Jones because he's a politician. And then he did the community service hours to get out of a jail sentence for his own political action committee, which obviously isn't a charity."
"On Thursday, during a debate between the two candidates, Jones apologized for his past conduct, saying he was ashamed and embarrassed. He added that Miyares is going to try to make this race about my mistakes, but this race has always been about more and the stakes of this race are too high for it to be about anything else."
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares criticized Democratic challenger Jay Jones as unfit for a prosecutor role, asserting Jones would fail a background check in any state's attorney general office. The criticism cites 2022 text messages in which Jones fantasized about shooting then-House Speaker Todd Gilbert and wished harm on Gilbert's children. The criticism also cites a 116 mph driving incident on I-64 where Jones avoided jail by completing community service. Three others in court that day received active or suspended jail time while Jones did not. Jones apologized during a debate, expressed shame and urged focus on broader race stakes.
