Australia plans to upgrade its navy by purchasing 11 Mogami-class frigates from Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, investing $6 billion over the next decade. This deal is Japan's largest defense export since World War II and aims to enhance Australia’s navy amid regional security concerns, particularly regarding China. The Mogami-class vessels will replace the aging Anzac-class ships, with the first to launch by 2030. The agreement strengthens the security partnership between Japan and Australia, both part of the Quad group with India and the U.S.
"This is clearly the biggest defense-industry agreement that has ever been struck between Japan and Australia," Marles said, touting the deal.
"The Mogami-class frigate is the best frigate for Australia," said Marles. "It is a next-generation vessel. It is stealthy. It has 32 vertical launch cells capable of launching long-range missiles."
