James McGreevey, James Solomon vying to be next mayor of Jersey City
"As mayor, we have to be persistent and deliberate in the approach to affordable housing. I commit in the first four years -- 1,000 units of senior citizen housing, 1,000 units of affordable housing,"
"I think you've got to look at connecting the systems. Whether it's PATH, whether it's light rail, whether it's bus rapid transit, whether it's parking for cars, you have to have an integrated system,"
"Right now in Jersey City, it's not integrated. It's piecemeal, so people get frustrated."
Seven candidates are running for mayor of Jersey City, with a new mayor to be elected on Nov. 4 after 12 years. James McGreevey proposes a three-part approach to affordable housing, including partnerships with houses of worship and reclaiming distressed properties, and commits to 1,000 senior units and 1,000 affordable units within the first four years. McGreevey favors integrated mass transit with more bus lanes, residential parking permits, and connected systems such as PATH, light rail and bus rapid transit, plus community solar on rooftops and e-bike licensing. Councilman James Solomon demands developers reserve 20% affordable units, wants rent caps, and seeks property tax stabilization.
