The proposed $1.8 billion slush fund would compensate alleged victims of “political weaponization” attributed to former-President Joe Biden’s Department of Justice. The category of “victims” includes rioters arrested for storming the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, during an attempted disruption of the Senate’s certification of the 2020 election results. Howard Kurtz said the backlash is breaking or loosening Trump’s control among Republicans. Kurtz described the plan as a bridge too far for many Republicans, citing rioters who attacked and injured police officers, seized members’ offices, and chanted for Mike Pence’s hanging. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said Trump does not support assaulting law enforcement, but people who injured police officers could still apply, with commissioners deciding whether claimants receive money.
