Corporate media ownership has shifted, concentrating decision-making over who speaks on networks and how coverage appears. That concentration changes reporting priorities and can reduce accountability. Freedom of the press is critical and necessary for national survival. When an administration makes outlets report only what it wants and discourages accountability, reporting becomes indistinguishable from state television. Such control erodes trustworthiness and the adversarial role of media. A separate 'Trump standard' now exists, with President Trump repeatedly covered differently. Those combined trends create a media environment that is frightening for democracy and undermines the watchdog function of journalism.
