"Galatolo is a larger than life leader. He inspired both loyalty and resentment."
A trial began in Redwood City against Ron Galatolo, former chancellor of the San Mateo County Community College District, who faces 27 charges including tax violations, misuse of public funds, conflict of interest, perjury and embezzlement. Prosecutors allege Galatolo received first-class plane tickets to Dubai, Super Bowl 50 tickets and luxury boxes and directed lucrative construction contracts to friends' firms in exchange for gifts. The defense maintains Galatolo did not misuse public funds, asserts contractors used all public money, and questions grand jury secrecy and a witness deal promising probation. The trial is overseen by Judge Leland Davis III and is expected to last months.
