The Kennedy Center board reportedly voted to rename the venue the Trump-Kennedy Center, a change publicized by the White House press secretary. The statutory name "John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts" is written into the law that authorized the venue. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the board lacks authority to rename the center without legislative action and called the move a disgrace and an embarrassment. Rep. Joyce Beatty said she was cut off and unable to unmute after expressing opposition during the virtual meeting. Rep. Rick Larsen and other Democrats criticized the move and said Congress must act to preserve the name.
