Many evangelical Christians assert that Donald Trump was divinely chosen to save America. They point to instances of attempted assassination against Trump as signs of God's protection. Numerous other presidents have faced similar threats, raising questions about the criteria for divine selection. Historical examples include failed assassination attempts on Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt, who survived crucial threats. The notion of imperfect messengers being used by God complicates these assertions and invites skepticism about distinguishing divine purpose from mere chance.
First, last July, an assassin took aim at Trump and missed. Evangelicals say that you can almost sense God's hand at work.
Of course assassins also tried, but failed, to kill a bunch of other presidents.
But I'm just getting warmed up here. A would-be assassin shot Teddy Roosevelt in the chest in Milwaukee in 1912.
If just one, which one, and how do we distinguish between the one who survived by the grace of God and the others who merely had good luck?
