Irish grandmother facing deportation from US is released from ICE custody
"Donna Hughes-Brown, a 58-year-old US green card holder, had been in ICE detention since July of this year, when she was apprehended at an airport in Chicago while returning to the US after a visit to Ireland. Born to Irish parents in England and raised in the US since she was a child, Hughes-Brown had never even lived in Ireland."
"Facing hard financial times as a single mother 10 years ago, she wrote two bad cheques while grocery shopping. She was charged with a misdemeanour, paid the restitution, and completed one year of probation. She was detained under the Immigration and Nationality Act, which was amended by President Trump on July 4 as part of his so-called 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act.'"
"A spokesperson for SMIA told Irish Central on Friday: "This quick release was a bit unexpected, but thanks to collaboration of so many organisations across state lines, Donna was able to be picked up as she waited for her husband's arrival. "She has now been reunited with her family." The spokesperson added that Hughes-Brown and her husband "have vowed to continue fighting for justice for those impacted by ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement].""
Donna Hughes-Brown, a 58-year-old US green card holder, was detained by ICE in July after being arrested at a Chicago airport while returning from Ireland. She had written two bad cheques during financial hardship a decade ago, was charged with a misdemeanor, paid restitution, and completed one year of probation. She was held under amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act enacted on July 4. An immigration hearing in Memphis on December 18 was scheduled to hear many character witnesses and a letter from 18 US Senators. After the first witness, Judge Kelly Johnson ordered her release and she was reunited with her family. The Southern Missouri Immigration Alliance confirmed the pickup and reported that she and her husband vowed to continue advocating for those affected by ICE.
