Ireland on collision course with Trump before White House visit
Briefly

Ireland's Tánaiste Simon Harris emphasized the country's firm backing for Ukraine amid concerns over rhetoric questioning its sovereignty. As Taoiseach Micheál Martin prepares for a crucial meeting with Donald Trump to discuss economic issues, there are fears that Ireland’s message on Ukraine might be lost. Harris criticized Trump's characterization of Ukrainian President Zelensky and reaffirmed that any peace negotiations should include Ukraine's perspective, highlighting the need for its territorial integrity to be respected and ensuring that decisions regarding Ukraine involve its government.
There's real alarm and concern across the European Union, and I think across Ireland, in terms of some of the rhetoric that we've heard in relation to Ukraine in recent days. Ukraine is not in anybody's gift. Ukraine is a sovereign country. Its territorial independence must be respected.
I think the challenges and difficulties due to what is now unfolding in Ukraine are acknowledged, but how peace is brought about matters as well. Nothing can be decided about Ukraine without Ukraine's involvement.
