ICE conducts 'Knock and Talk' in Fremont, raising concerns among community leaders
"To me, that is nothing sort of racial profiling. And to me, it is so disheartening to see these ICE agents terrorize our community,"
"And we see that when ICE comes into communities and conducts raids like this, the aftermath is that kids don't go to school. That people don't seek health care,"
"We were very alarmed when we first heard about it. We were informed this is a 'knock and talk' program. Where it is a voluntary program, And they talk to folks and they try to see if they will come talk to them. And that is all we know,"
ICE agents conducted operations early Saturday morning in Fremont's Sundale neighborhood. The Sundale neighborhood includes many Afghan refugees who arrived legally and many are SNAP recipients. Community members described the operation as racial profiling and reported fear, children missing school, and reluctance to seek health care after raids. Earlier this year many Afghan humanitarian parolee visas were threatened with revocation. Fremont police received notice just before 7 a.m. and ICE concluded activity around 10 a.m. City officials indicated ICE contacted Fremont police ahead of deployment. Fremont maintains sanctuary city policies and focuses local policing on crimes rather than immigration status.
