Hundreds at Voice of America and parent agency to lose jobs DW 08/31/2025
Briefly

More than 500 federal employees at the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees Voice of America and other international broadcasters, will be cut through a reduction in force. Acting CEO Kari Lake announced the RIF and said she plans additional steps to reform the agency and ensure America's voice is heard abroad. The move comes amid court rulings blocking the firing of VOA director Michael Abramowitz and a judge's order giving the administration one final opportunity, short of contempt, to restore VOA operations and requiring Lake to sit for a deposition by September 15. Agency employees condemned the cuts and await the deposition.
"The US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) has initiated what is known as a reduction in force (RIF) of a large number of its full-time federal employees,"
"I look forward to taking additional steps in the coming months to improve the functioning of a very broken agency and make sure America's voice is heard abroad where it matters most."
"We find Lake's continued attacks on our agency abhorrent, they said in a statement.
"We are looking forward to her deposition to hear whether her plan to dismantle VOA was done with the rigorous review process that Congress requires."
