"In response to this incident, Marte joined with Assembly Member Grace Lee, and Congress Member Dan Goldman, along with several volunteers, on Saturday morning to canvas the Lower East Side and speak with local workers. According to the politicians, they handed out pamphlets in Spanish and English that informed immigrant workers of their rights and employers of their legal abilities to deny ICE access to their place of employment."
Locals reported spotting several ICE agents on Thursday afternoon near Broome and Eldridge streets who were seen taking photos and attempting to access the rear of a coffee shop. A worker asked the agents to vacate and a barista stopped speaking to them and politely told them to leave. City officials canvassed the Lower East Side, visiting storefronts to inform business owners and employees of their legal rights regarding ICE encounters. Council Member Christopher Marte joined Assembly Member Grace Lee, Congressman Dan Goldman, and volunteers to distribute pamphlets in Spanish and English explaining rights and how employers can deny ICE access.
