How Minnesota became the center of a political crisis
"We're seeing this level of chaos only in Minneapolis,"
"Maybe the problem is unique to Minneapolis, and we believe that it is,"
"It's a lack of cooperation between state and local law enforcement and federal law enforcement."
"the president could change his mind."
An ICE officer fatally shot Renee Macklin Good more than two weeks ago, sparking massive unrest in Minneapolis with protests and legal battles over a surge of federal law enforcement. The shooting intensified an existing political conflict between the Trump administration and Minnesota Democrats led by Gov. Tim Walz. Vice President JD Vance visited Minneapolis, asserting the chaos is unique to the city and attributing it to a lack of cooperation between state, local, and federal law enforcement. President Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act and the Pentagon put up to 1,500 troops on standby. Local officials, including Mayor Jacob Frey, described federal efforts as an invasion. Minnesota also experienced a mass shooting at a Catholic school in August and the political assassination of state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her spouse in June.
