Luis Beltran Yanez-Cruz, 68, died while in ICE custody after being transferred to a California detention facility. He began telling his family he was not feeling well a few days after the transfer, according to his daughter. He was one of six people who died in ICE custody during the first two weeks of 2026, following 32 deaths in 2025, the highest annual total since the agency was created. Family members raised questions about the medical care he received.
