"In hindsight, we should have taken it down right away"
The U.S. entry in the World Snow Sculpting Championship in Stillwater, Minn., was removed after organizers determined the team altered its originally submitted design to depict American Sign Language messages including ICE out. The three-person team changed a planned sphere of outstretched hands into bigger hands displaying gestures such as peace signs and ASL spelling ICE out, love, unity and resist. Event rules require adherence to the submitted sketch and prohibit offensive, controversial, political, or inappropriate themes. Organizers received complaints and modified the sculpture on Jan. 19 by removing some hand signs, then removed it entirely from Lowell Park on Jan. 26. The team cited poor snow quality during carving as a factor.
