Peter Burke, the Enterprise Minister, voiced support for Heather Humphreys, who is aiming for Fine Gael's presidential nomination. After Mairead McGuinness's withdrawal due to health reasons, nominations were reopened, requiring candidates to secure specific backing. Humphreys has garnered support from several TDs and senators within the party, while Mr. Kelly has a smaller list of backers. The process ahead involves receiving 20 votes from councillors, 25 from Oireachtas members, and five from the Executive Council for successful nomination.
Backing Ms Humphreys, Peter Burke said: "It is time for Fine Gael to show leadership and support someone who has proven experience and capabilities in government."
The reopening of nominations comes after Mairead McGuinness ruled herself out of the running due to health issues, leading to uncertainty within the party regarding its presidential candidate.
