Gustavo Petro: US to revoke visa of leftist Colombian leader DW 09/27/2025
"The State Department said in a post on X that the revocation was due to Petro's "reckless and incendiary actions." Petro is in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly. Earlier on Friday, he told a group of protesters in New York that US soldiers should "disobey the orders of Trump" and "Obey the orders of humanity!" Those comments seem to be the last straw for US President Donald Trump's administration."
"During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Petro strongly criticized the Trump administration's strikes on alleged drug-trafficking Venezuelan boats in the Caribbean Sea. The Colombian president even went so far as to say that Trump should face "criminal proceedings" over the killings. Petro, who took office in August 2022, is also a strong critic of Israel's military campaign in Gaza, putting him at odds with the Trump administration."
The US Department of State revoked Colombian President Gustavo Petro's US visa, citing his "reckless and incendiary actions." Petro traveled to New York for the United Nations General Assembly and told protesters that US soldiers should "disobey the orders of Trump" and "obey the orders of humanity." He criticized US strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug-trafficking boats and called for criminal proceedings against Trump over the killings. Petro also opposes Israel's military campaign in Gaza. Earlier tensions included Colombia blocking US planes carrying deportees, reciprocal visa revocations and tariffs, and retaliatory Colombian tariffs before a diplomatic de-escalation.
