"Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) warned the president and his administration to expect more Republican congressional "defections" after the GOP primaries conclude in early spring. Massie was one of six House Republicans who voted for a successful resolution to block some of Trump's tariffs. "On any given day, I would just need one or two of my own co-conspirators to get something done," Massie recently told Politico. "I think you're going to see more defections.""
""The margin is razor-thin, so on any given day, I would just need one or two of my own co-conspirators to get something done," Massie added. "And what's happening is that the retirement caucus is growing, and primary days are coming up and passing. Once we get past March, April, and May, which contain a large portion of their Republican primaries, I think you're going to see more defections.""
Rep. Thomas Massie predicts an increase in Republican defections after the GOP primaries conclude in spring, citing a growing retirement caucus and upcoming primary dates. Massie was among six House Republicans who backed a resolution to block parts of former President Trump's tariffs. The current House roster includes 218 Republicans, 214 Democrats, and three vacancies, producing a razor-thin majority that allows Speaker Mike Johnson to lose only one Republican on party-line votes. Massie says one or two allies can change outcomes and expects defections once March through May primaries pass. Former President Trump publicly insulted Massie, endorsed his primary opponent, and criticized past budget votes.
