The House Natural Resources Committee has advanced a GOP budget proposal that opens vast public lands for oil and gas extraction, logging, and mining. Key areas like Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge face leasing for fossil fuel extraction, alarming Indigenous groups and climate advocates. The bill also increases logging in U.S. forests by 25%, removing protections for old growth trees. While it passed mostly along party lines, it raises concerns over public resources being sacrificed for tax cuts benefiting the wealthy.
"If Big Oil, Wall Street, and MAGA cultists locked themselves in a room to write a wish list, this bill would be it," stated Jared Huffman, highlighting concerns.
Republicans claim the bill lowers royalties for oil and gas companies but will ultimately raise $18 billion in revenues for the government.
