Ric Grenell has alienated many administration members and faces speculation that his role is untenable. He was the first out gay member of the Trump administration, served as ambassador to Germany and later as acting Director of National Intelligence during the final days of Trump's first term. He was appointed special presidential envoy for special missions early in Trump's second term. He allegedly sought higher offices, including Secretary of State and vice president, and reportedly paid conservative influencers to promote him. In July his freelancing as special envoy reportedly damaged negotiations over prisoner swaps, and he was subsequently frozen out of high-level foreign policy decisions.
