Grenell asserted he ended the opera's exclusive partnership to free funds and bring in operas from around the world. He said millions were spent supporting the opera's exclusivity while the company remained millions in the hole. The opera's board approved a resolution to seek early termination and resume as an independent nonprofit. Francesca Zambello said she is deeply saddened to leave.
