Bessent said Newsom may know less about economics than Vice President Kamala Harris and accused him of dining at the French Laundry during COVID-19 lockdowns while others were arrested for attending church. Bessent called Alex Soros Newsom's "billionaire sugar daddy" and tied Soros's presence in Davos to Newsom's praise there. Alex Soros is identified as the 40-year-old son of billionaire George Soros, and George Soros is a frequent target of right-wing attacks.
