Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard revoked the security clearance of an undercover senior CIA officer and included the officer's name on a list of 37 current and former officials stripped of clearances. Most of those on the list were tied to intelligence assessments about Russia and the 2016 election or had signed a 2019 impeachment letter. Revocation prevents agents from handling classified documents and can effectively end intelligence employment. CIA officials said they were not meaningfully consulted and received the list the night before its public release. Former CIA staff warned the action could jeopardize cover procedures and foreign relations. A spokesperson said revocations aim to stop weaponizing, politicizing, manipulating, or leaking intelligence.
According to the Wall Street Journal, CIA officials were blindsided when Gabbard included the name of the undercover officer on a list of 37 current and former officials she stripped of security clearances last week. Most of those on the list were involved with intelligence assessments on Russia's involvement in the 2016 election, or they signed a 2019 letter calling for President Donald Trump's impeachment.
The Journal cites three sources stating that Gabbard's office did not meaningfully consult with the CIA ahead of time. They got the list the night before Gabbard released it publicly in a post on X. Being entrusted with a security clearance is a privilege, not a right. Those in the Intelligence Community who betray their oath to the Constitution and put their own interests ahead of the interests of the American people have broken the sacred trust they promised to uphold.
