Macron announced France's intention to recognize Palestine as a state during the UN General Assembly, responding to commitments made by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. This comes amidst concerns over the Gaza humanitarian crisis, with hopes that an upcoming conference will encourage further recognition of Palestine. Israeli officials condemned the announcement, fearing that a Palestinian state could threaten Israel's existence. Macron aims to mobilize international support for peace efforts in the region. The Israeli government suggested annexing the West Bank in response to the recognition move.
"In light of the commitments you have made, France will proceed with the full recognition of Palestine as a state when I attend the United Nations General Assembly this September. In doing so, France intends to make a decisive contribution to peace in the Middle East and will mobilize all of its international partners who wish to participate."
"A Palestinian state in these conditions would be a launch pad to annihilate Israel - not to live in peace beside it," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement.
