The meeting between President Trump and Russian leader Putin indicates a critical step towards peace. However, trust in Putin's word is absent, necessitating security guarantees to prevent further aggression in Ukraine. Trump's strategy seems focused on escalating tensions briefly to facilitate a peace deal, acknowledging that Putin may only compromise under pressure. The economic implications of his actions impact not only Russia but also its allies, which could leverage negotiations. Yet, concerns remain that appealing to Putin may not yield favorable outcomes for reducing conflict.
Every meeting, every minute this meeting continues is a great thing towards peace, right? However, my initial take is that Putin's word can never be trusted.
No matter what comes out of it, there has to be real security guarantees to stop him from coming back in Ukraine after the president leaves office.
The right strategy here is quickly escalating tensions in order to de-escalate and do whatever it takes to create a deal before the killing gets worse.
Putin is only going to agree to peace under duress, either economic duress or the threat of greater force.
